Holiday Records, Music First and Jandal Records are delighted to present “Live at The Upside Down Lounge Vol.1” by Joe Kaptein, one of the hottest talents in the NZ Jazz scene.

Recorded live at Goblin in the heart of Ponsonby on 26 May 2026, the album features Hank Trenton on bass, George Brajkovich on drums, Ruby Fainaa on percussion and a special guest appearance by NZ Jazz icon, Nathan Haines (on “Intergalactic Love Song”). 

The album was conceptualized by Music First and recorded live (with the assistance of live mix engineer Thomas Healey) to celebrate the one year anniversary of Joe’s weekly residency at Goblin - The Upside Down Lounge, and aims to capture the spirit of classic live jazz LPs recorded for the likes of Blue Note and CTI Records.

Joe Kaptein

Joe Kaptein is a multi-instrumentalist, but mainly a keyboardist, who composes and produces music in Auckland, New Zealand, including the ethereal experimental swamp-jazz collective Pool Sharks, the power trio AIGHT, and more.

He is also the boss of Jandal Records, and also works with The Circling Sun, Princess Chelsea, Nathan Haines, SIX60, Crystal Chen, The Situations, Tom Scott, and others.
